So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. – Isaiah 41:10
Can you think of a time when you were truly scared? Now try to imagine the same situation with the all-powerful creator of the universe standing next to you, His hand on your shoulder. This is His promise to us, in the simple words, “I am with you.”
God is ever present and in all places, so of course he is “always with us.” But His words here speak of something closer and more intimate. He is not simply ‘god’, but says “I am your God.” He is standing next to you with His hand on your shoulder because He loves you, He wants to be with you, and He wants to strengthen you through your fear. In the prior verse, God tells us He has called and chosen us. These are not the words of a distant creator sitting back watching what happens to his creation, but of a loving God who desires to care for and help us when we are afraid or dismayed. He is with you.
