Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Proverbs 4:23
What does the word “heart” mean here? You can answer that by the second part of the verse. Everything we do flows from it — our will, our inner person. What we do comes from who we are inside, our thoughts, feelings and emotions.
We are loved children of God, but we need to protect who we are. Our good intentions can be quickly changed by a selfish thought, our kindness can disappear into emotions of envy or jealousy, feelings can be misplaced by wrong desires. That’s why we need a sentry at the gate. We need protection and warning at the door of our heart. It takes constant watchfulness to overcome who we have been in the past, the deeds we have done and our minds full of selfish thoughts. The Holy Spirit is the guard that warns us, but also protects us. As we let Him keep protecting who we are and who we want to be, our guarded hearts become filled with Him and the things that flow from us become filled with love.
