Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Proverbs 4:23
What is your passion? Who or what do you love? In the morning, what is your first thought? These all spring up from who we are, our deepest place, our identity. Our heart.
When Proverbs was written springs were a common source of water. This is the metaphor being used for our “heart.” In our modern world with plumbing and water plants we can’t fully appreciate the concept of our heart being like a spring, but we can still imagine the concept of “source.” Our life, what we do and how we act, bubbles up from the person we are inside. Our thoughts and emotions are the source of everything else in our life. When our first thought in the morning is filled with self and selfishness, then that is what will flow from us. If what we love is money or recognition, then that is what will flow from us. If our passion is anything other than loving and serving God, then that is what will flow from us. We have to guard against the negative!
But now, turn these around. What if our first thought in the morning is to thank God for a new day and praise Him? What if our love is always focussed on the Lord and those around us? What if our passion is a deep desire to please our Savior? What, then, will spring out from us? Guard your heart!
