In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. – Proverbs 16:9
Do you have plans for today? For tomorrow? For next week? What about your five year plan? Self-help books tell us we should set our goals and make plans to attain them. It seems every accomplished person has followed thought-through plans to achieve their success.
There is certainly nothing wrong with making plans, as long as they are weighed against what we know God wants for us. We have to ask, do our plans bring glory to Him and show that we love Him, because we know that is always His plan for us. His plans actually stretch out for all eternity, way beyond what we can even comprehend. But what does it say He is interested in regarding our plans? Our steps. The moment by moment way in which we lead our lives. He can establish our steps because He gives us direction for how we should live. We can’t get too carried away with “the big picture” but need to make sure we are putting one foot in front of the other. Each individual step is part of a walk that should show we love God and bring honor to Him. If God just revealed to us how our life would unfold, where would faith have a part? Instead, He leads the way. Step by step means we have to have to trust Him.
