But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. – Isaiah 40:31

When God gives us strength, it is not so we have just enough endurance to barely finish. This might have seemed so if the passage only talked about walking and not being faint, as if we labor through some task and have just enough to keep going. But…

We run, and we don’t get weary even then! When God empowers us, we never just plod along. Runners can stumble, collapse, and even be unable to continue. But to run and never become weary? This means endless stamina. We are not “barely finishing” but able to run as fast at the end as in the beginning. God gives us a new kind of strength, one that we know is not from us. We know we get faint, and we know we can’t keep running and not get tired. But God’s power renews us, and we can. This new strength, or a complete renewal of what we already had, comes from our hope in the Lord. It comes through faith.

All of that would seem enough and even extraordinary, but God keeps going. We will soar as if we had eagle’s wings. We will not only walk and not only run. We will be so energized by our faith that it is as if we are sailing though the air. What we might have seen as needing help to just get through, God turns into a beautiful flight of His never-ending power.
