For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:10

What does the word “create” suggest? We may think of a work of art, or some ingenious invention. A writer might create a new story, or teacher might create a good learning environment. But when we speak of God creating, it takes on a much deeper meaning.

God creates with His own power and imagination, and makes things out of nothing. God imagines an atom, and there it is. God envisions the universe, and it comes into existence. There is nothing beyond his creative power, and it is all original. That same power is at work in us. As with all things, we are made by God. He thought us up and brought us into being. More than that, He has formed us for a specific purpose. In fact, He makes us all brand new through what Jesus has done. His death and resurrection has brought us into God’s forgiveness, and God reaches down and re-creates who we are. All of our past failures are gone, and now we are made to do good works.

Even more amazing, these good works were already prepared by God for us to do. He has them planned out and we are part of that plan for accomplishing them. Even though God can speak the entire universe into existence, His plan is for us to do some of the work as well. We participate with Him, He has prepared things for us to, and He loves us. God made us!
