No temptation has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13
Through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus we have been forgiven, and become children of God. We trust Him for our future and the Holy Spirit guides us in our day to day walk, and gives us power to become new. What about these temptations then?
God sees us as made new through Christ. He knows the gifts He has given us and the love that can grow in our lives. But often we don’t see ourselves that way. We are uncertain about our usefulness, we doubt the reality of our faith, and even question our own love for God. In other words, we continue to see ourselves through the lens of our wrongs and failures. But God has a solution to this.
If something pulls us back to old ways of thinking and doing, what proves to us that God is faithful and has forgiven us? When we resist! When we are faced with the choice of doing wrong, and we fight our desire and instead go the other way, we see that God has changed us. We no longer do what we want with no concern and no conscience, but instead we desire to please our Father. But this cannot happen without facing trials. We may sometimes fail, but we see that God has changed us and we grow stronger. He provides a way out, through the power of the Holy Spirit within us and the encouragement of His word. We can stand, because we learn how to stand. Every triumph strengthens our faith, and deepens our relationship to our Father. God teaches us through temptation. He shows us who we can be and helps us see ourselves the way He sees us — as loved children who are forgiven and kept safe.
