The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” So the Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this black mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled out by the roots and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. – Luke 17:5-6

Imagine walking with Jesus the way his early disciples did. What if we could see Him heal the sick, feed 5000 hungry people, and walk on water? Each time He works one of these miracles He would talk about faith. Like those followers back then, we would watch all this and also ask “how can i have that kind of faith?”

We want our faith to grow. We want to participate in the miraculous, and have confidence in every situation. We want God’s power to be working every day in us, the same way it did in Jesus. Increase our faith! Jesus responds by saying we only need to have the tiniest amount of faith. In fact, so tiny it is barely measurable. He was saying we already have enough faith, what we lack is acknowledging the object of our faith, the Father. When we believe, we are not bringing about anything except recognizing the grace and love of God. His grace and love already exist and already are all-powerful. When Jesus told the disciples they could uproot a tree with their faith, was He telling them that faith would move the tree, or that the Creator of the tree was capable of moving it?

As we get to know the focus of our faith, we begin to realize our hope is in the Creator of all things, and even though we can’t see Him with our eyes, our relationship and love for Him grows. So perhaps our faith does “increase” — we begin to understand that it takes the tiniest amount on our part, because our trust rests in a mighty and loving God.
