He will shelter you with his wings; you will find safety under his wings. His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall. – Psalm 91:4
What are the things that protect you? You might have a wall or fence, strong locks on your doors, or even some kind of weapon. You might have a security system or army of bodyguards. Your house could be flood-proof, fire-proof and built to withstand earthquakes. The list could go on and on. All of us want to feel free from harm or danger.
The only real safety is from God. This isn’t a safety we get by trying to please Him and keep Him from getting angry from us, or in some way making a deal with Him so “nothing bad happens.” God is faithful. He wants us to feel sheltered by Him, we are His loved children. He shelters us with his “wings.” This is a tender and caring protection, not simply keeping us out of harm’s way but actively protecting us.
We are surrounded by things that could harm us – from a childish insult to armies of war, from a slippery sidewalk to a violent storm, from a temptation to do wrong to a haunting memory from our past. Everyday we need God’s protection, and there He is like a mighty shield or solid wall. His gentle arms cover us, always. We are under His wings.
