Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. – Matthew 11:29
Imagine the context of when Jesus said these things. Slavery and servitude were common things. Most people were oppressed by poverty, working hard to simply provide necessities. They had the burden of this endless labor, but also the burden of religious requirements. In every part of their life, people were weighed down.
Things are still the same. We may have more leisure and the conveniences of technology, but our lives are filled with complexity. We, like all generations, are overwhelmed by the heaviness of sin. We have little contentment and no hope, for we all will eventually face death. All that we have worked for will be gone, and we will soon be forgotten. The words of Jesus still apply. Rest and peace come from serving Him. We learn from Him and do the things He desires, all the while we are becoming more familiar with his gentle heart. Love replaces the discontent we had, and hope took the place of our discouragement. Jesus comes to our soul, and we find rest.
