And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. – Ephesians 3:17-19
Paul is praying that we all should understand God’s love. But how can we do that? How can we know what is beyond our knowing?
Imagine for a moment the vastness of God’s creation. Can you measure it’s height or width? Can you count the number of atoms in the universe or compute the amount of molecules on every planet? He has made innumerable things, some big and some so small we can barely perceive them. Scientists might be able to give estimates of all this, but the results still push our ability to comprehend.
God’s love is like this, only bigger. Yes, bigger. Love is part of who God is, not something He has created. It is part of Him and even more gigantic than all of creation! And His love is focussed on us. Our very existence is dependent on God’s love, as well as our forgiveness and salvation. We are “rooted and established” in love. Everything we have begins with God’s care for us. He is passionate about us, and we are secure in this. More than that, God cherishes us far above all the rest of what He has created. No wonder God provides to us in ways so that we are overflowing. We have more than we need. We are filled using God’s measurements — and His love keeps going beyond!
