Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. – Colossians 3:23-24
Who is it you work for? Is it your boss? Some company? A client? The stockholders, or your own kids?
Paul was addressing these words to slaves who had become followers of Jesus. They should work even more diligently now that they served Him. Even though they still were in the service of an earthly master, their lives were dedicated to Jesus. Imagine how amazing it would have been, as a slave, to be told you had an inheritance!
We are probably in a less oppressive circumstance, but it is still the Lord Christ that we serve. Our compensation is from Him. We receive an inheritance from the Maker of all things, and eternal life. More than that, each day we are given our needs as God provides for us.
Our work, our jobs, our day to day tasks are all part of where God has placed us. No matter the situation, ultimately we serve Him. We are working for the Lord, our loving Father. And the final reward is beyond our wildest imagination.
