This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of him. – 1 John 5:14-15
What does it mean to ask God “according to His will”? It is never in God’s will to ask for something we know is not right. We don’t ask God to give us things we know are contrary to His word and teachings. But sometimes these words become an excuse for us to pray with hesitancy. We may feel like we need to determine God’s specific will before we ask anything. Or we lack faith, so we give ourselves an out.
His will is always for our best and His glory. We pray acknowledging this to be how God will work. We don’t have to figure out exactly what His will is for every situation and request, because we can’t possibly know. So we ask, we recognize that God is going to answer our request based on what is best for us, and we know that He hears us. We can be confident that He hears us, and we can be confident that if He hears us then we will have what we asked for.
The wonderful thing about this is that God always answers our prayers, and always in a way that is for our best even though we may not know what that is. We don’t have to look for an excuse or be tentative, we can be confident! We will have what we asked of Him. He hears us.
