Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. – 2 Corinthians 9:7
What do we have that God hasn’t given to us? From the things we “own” to our friends and family to our talents and gifts, everything has been provided from God’s hand. It seems silly to think we can give anything at all to Him. Do we really possess things and then offer them to Him?
Instead of “possessors” let us be caretakers. All of creation belongs to our Father, and as part of His family we share in that as well. If we have money, He allows us to decide how much of it we need to live on and make choices about how we spend it. In our heart we can determine how it is used. But basically, we are administering His money not our own. We are stewards, taking care of things on behalf of Him.
This applies to our time, our talents, anything at all. How we care for and attend to those things should be as someone who is looking out for the interests of another. They all belong to God and we are acting on His behalf. Amazingly, as part of this He allows us to make our own decisions about how much we use for ourselves. Can this lead to selfishness or bad decisions? Of course. We see that (or do that!) all the time. He never forces us to be generous, because He wants us to learn how to act in love. Love is the way He wants us to administer whatever He has given us.
Be a steward, be a giver. You are looking out for the whole of creation, how can that not make you cheerful!
