By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. – John 13:35
What does the word “disciple” mean, and what does it mean to be one?
Disciple simply means a pupil, a student. We learn from what Jesus said, and from what He did. His teachings are truthful and essential, and His life of unselfishness here on earth eventually ended in His death and resurrection for our forgiveness. We are devoted students. Followers of Him. Disciples.
And how will people know we are His disciples? Will we perform miracles, move mountains, walk on water, heal the sick, perform great deeds? Perhaps all of those things will happen and more, but people will know we follow Jesus because of our love for one another. All of what He taught and lived was to show us how to love. It’s not enough to say we are His followers, or say we go to church, or say we care about people, or say we believe, or say we have the right doctrines, or say, say, say. If you love one another — that is how people will know we are His followers.
