Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life. – John 5:24
It might be natural to wonder about the sound of Jesus’ voice, what was it like? Even more than that, what would it have been like to hear the the Son of God begin a teaching by saying “truly, truly”? Jesus looked out at those listening and said, “what I am about to say is not only true but very very important.”
He continues, “You are hearing my voice, and if you listen and believe — if you believe I am sent from God…” Jesus was telling everyone that simple faith was all they needed, all they had to do was believe.
“…then you have eternal life, and you will not be judged for your sins.” How amazing this must have sounded to those listening. Eternal life? Wow! My sins forgiven? Wow!
Jesus went on, “That’s right, you are forgiven and have eternal life. In fact, by simply believing you have been changed from being dead to being alive.” There is nothing halfway, you are not “kind of” forgiven or “sort of” alive. You were dead, now you are alive!
It must have been incredible to actually hear the voice of Jesus speak these words. So uncomplicated, yet Jesus Himself introduced them as so very important — believe, and you will be forgiven and have eternal life. We can still hear His voice today, and these words are just as true.
