More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ – Philippians 3:8
Make a list of things that are more valuable to you than than the love, joy and forgiveness that comes from your heavenly Father. I’ll wait…
In our hearts and minds we know nothing is more significant or treasured than Jesus. Yet, we spend each day treating so many things as if they are. We hold onto our cars or houses, our jobs or hobbies, our families or friends. None of these are wrong in and of themselves. But we lift them up, we allow them to push our most cherished thing away from our thoughts and feelings. Jesus takes second (or third or fourth or fifth) place. This is not the way to show someone you love them, nor how we would demonstrate to others what we hold most dear.
Paul said he considered everything trash compared to knowing Christ. Paul was a Jewish man with Roman citizenship. He had a good trade and was probably well-off. He was an up-and-coming leader in his religion, and was respected and admired. He had everything going for him, and was looking forward to a life of comfort and success. And he calls all of that garbage. The only thing he held dear was knowing Jesus, receiving His forgiveness and love. Everything else was of no value to him.
There is nothing greater than knowing Jesus. Compared to that, everything else is worthless.
