Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:2
What are you looking to change about yourself? Perhaps this question could also be, what about yourself are you unhappy with? It might be really big or just some small stuff, but all of us have something about ourselves we would like to make better. Sometimes it is actions or habits, or it may be things like worrying too much or feeling stressed.
Imagine for a moment you can see yourself the way God sees you. He sees all your potential where you may only see your failures. He sees the gifts He has given you, where you may see only your inabilities. While we may be filled with discouragement, or perhaps even a selfish pride, He sees us exactly for who we are and views us through the lens of His great love for us. God has a good and perfect plan for us, He even calls it a pleasing will. His plan is for us to love and worship and serve Him, and live full of joy and contentment. But our natural propensity is to doubt, is to rely on ourselves, is to lean towards wrong rather than right. When we believe and follow Jesus, all of those things change because we are now living by faith. But they don’t change overnight.
Romans 12:2 is both an exhortation and a promise. God tells us not to continue old habits or ways of thinking, but He tells us the way this will happen is by the renewing of our mind. Only He can do that for us. We cannot transform ourselves, but we can believe that God can change us. We trust His will for us, and grow in our faith in what He can do. We are transformed, not into something different but back into what we were meant to be!
