…who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. – 2 Corinthians 1:4
What is the thing that most puts you at ease when you need it, the thing that quiets your fears?
God says He will comfort us in all our troubles. This isn’t just a nice pat on the head and an “it will be ok.” God fully understands our fears and emotions. He knows about every problem and every situation. We are comforted by knowing He controls each circumstance and is working in our lives. God says, “it will be ok because I love you and I am with you and I am taking care of things.” We can have peace because we know God’s love and grace for us is boundless, and the final result will always be eternal life.
Even as He encourages us, we should be encouraging others. But again, this is not just patting someone on the head and saying it will be ok. We comfort others by sharing in their feelings or apprehensions. We provide for them if that is what is necessary. We go through things with them. We sit with them, cry with them, pray with them. In other words, we do more than offer a word or two, we offer ourselves.
God gives us gifts because He loves us and wants to fill us with joy and delight. But He also loves when we share what He gives us with others. When we do that, we reflect the grace that He continually provides us. Has God comforted you? Then comfort others with the comfort He has given you. Has God encouraged you? Then encourage others with the encouragement He has given you. Does God love you? Then love others with that same love!
