Make sure that no one repays evil for evil. Always pursue what is good for one another and for all people. – 1 Thessalonians 5:15
It’s time to practice abstinence… from revenge.
Someone does us wrong, so we are going to get them back. We plot in our minds, and perhaps our hearts are consumed to even the score. But all of this is grounded in pride, in seeing ourselves as better than others.
That person you so desperately want to turn the tables on, is a sinner just like you. Just like you! You are no better, nor worse. Both of you are loved by God and share in His grace. So basically, how dare you seek to do evil to them, even if it is in return for what they themselves have done. How someone else treats you has no bearing at all at how you are commanded to treat them—with love.
Instead of getting stuck in our thoughts of revenge, we should run after things that are good for others. Don’t wait for some chance, but actually pursue doing good. Look for it, seek it out, discover what someone needs. Chase after what is good!
