Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7
What are we letting control our hearts and minds? Is it our worries? Our past? Our situation? God says He has something better for us. He wants His peace to be the thing that drives our thoughts and emotions. In fact, He says His peace will guard them.
God must love to listen to us and talk to us. How often He asks us to pray — in every situation, even when we are overcome by fear or anxiety. He want to hear about it, He wants to love us. But He doesn’t simply listen, He wants to know our requests, He wants to know what we need for the circumstance, He wants to know what will relieve our apprehensions. He is not just saying, “don’t worry,” He is saying tell me what you need so I can take care of it with you.
That is the peace of God, that in everything He is actively working to bring us through, to change things or to give us strength. Because of that, we have this amazing experience: In the middle of the hardest things, God’s peace (that we can’t even understand) comes to us, and guards us to bring our thoughts to Him, and calm our hearts.
