Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. – Philippians 2:3
What worth do you put on someone you love? They become the most valuable thing in your life! Their happiness and needs become foremost. Their success is more important to you than your own. You spend your time and energy on being attentive and lifting them up in whatever ways you can.
We think highly of ourselves. We want the things we want, and we crave recognition. Our ambitions and desires are by nature directed toward ourselves, and we always like to be right. Love is what clears away our self-centeredness. We put others in the front of our hearts and minds and we begin to lose these selfish ways of thinking and living. We become focussed on their needs and desires, and we share their joys and hurts.
The beauty of humility is not only lifting up others, but their lifting us up as well. We all work together. Each of our individual goals and ambitions become group efforts. We accomplish love, and we accomplish much more than any of us could on our own. Do you want to do something? Then do nothing (out of selfish ambition)!
