Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. – Hebrews 12:1
We are in a race.
Sometimes we sprint, sometimes we trot, other times we may walk. We may even stop and rest occasionally. But we keep moving forward, never back. The course has been marked out for us, but we are not trying to win or “do better” than someone else. We are only asked to make it to the finish line!
Would we wear a heavy backpack or carry a bulky bag while we raced? Would we wear clothes that hindered our motion? No, we throw off anything that would slow us down or make moving more difficult.
What is it that keeps us from moving freely as we follow Jesus? Is it a sin we hold onto? Things that we desire? Relationships or possessions?
The race is difficult enough without extra weight, constricting clothes, and distractions. Like a runner we need to leave all these behind. Get rid of what slows you down!
