Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Proverbs 4:23
What does the word “heart” mean here? You can answer that by the second part of the passage. Everything we do flows from it — our will, our inner person. What we do comes from who we are inside, our thoughts, feelings and emotions.
We are loved children of God, but we need to protect who we are. Our good intentions can be quickly changed by a selfish thought, our kindness can disappear into emotions of envy or jealousy, feelings can be misplaced by wrong desires. That’s why we need a shepherd at the gate of out heart.
It takes constant attention to overcome who we have been in the past—the deeds we have done and our minds full of self-centered thoughts. The Holy Spirit is the sentry that warns us, and also protects us. Rather than our old ways, as we let Him watch over who we are and who we want to be His love will flow from us. Our hearts will be safe.
