And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him. – 1 John 5:14-15
What does it mean to ask God “according to His will”? These words can become an excuse for us to pray with hesitancy. We may feel like we need to determine God’s will before we ask anything, or we lack faith so we give ourselves an out.
God’s will is always for our best and His glory. We pray acknowledging this to be how He works. We know it is never in God’s will to ask for something selfishly or to enable our own sinfulness. We don’t ask God to give us things we know are contrary to His word and teachings.
We don’t have to figure out exactly what God’s will is for every situation and request, because we can’t possibly know. But that shouldn’t make us tentative. Instead, we recognize that God is going to answer our requests based on what is best for us. We can be confident that He always hears us, and He promises that if He hears us then we will have what we asked for.
God always answers our prayers, and always in a way that is for our best even though we may not know what that is. We don’t have to look for an excuse or be tentative, we can be confident! We will have what we asked of Him, for our benefit and for His glory. He hears us!
