He will shelter you with his wings; you will find safety under his wings. His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall. – Psalm 91:4
What makes you feel safe?
You might have a wall or fence, strong locks on your doors, or even some kind of weapon. You might have a security system or army of bodyguards. Your house could be flood-proof, fire-proof and built to withstand earthquakes. You might have a bomb shelter or panic room.
All of us want to feel safe from harm or danger. Some people think they stay safe by trying to please God and keep Him from getting angry, or in some way making a deal with Him so “nothing bad happens.” But God protects us and wants us to feel safe not because of what we do, but because we are His children.
Our heavenly Father is loving and faithful. He shelters us with his “wings.” This is tender and caring protection, not just keeping us out of harm’s way but actively protecting us. Things may still threaten us, or dangerous situations may still overtake us. But the maker of all things is watching out for us.
Every day we are surrounded by things that could harm us—from a childish insult to armies of war; a slippery sidewalk to a violent storm; a case of sniffles to a deadly disease; a temptation to do wrong to a haunting memory from our past. In all things we need God’s protection, and He is always there like a mighty shield or a sturdy wall. His gentle arms cover us, always. We are under His wings. He is our shelter!
