I am like a tree

I am like a tree

Instead he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands; he meditates on his commands day and night. He is like a tree planted by flowing streams; it yields its fruit at the proper time, and its leaves never fall off. He succeeds in everything he attempts. – Psalm 1:2-3

Think about how powerful of an image this was for people that lived in a desert. Trees do not do very well there. In fact, they don’t grow at all. Any spot where there is water would be an important and essential place.

God wants us to be happy in our service to Him. He wants us to find enjoyment in our relationship with Him, the same way He enjoys being with us. The things He has for us to do, and the way He has provided forgiveness to us so that we can do these good things, should fill us with joy.

All around us is desert, and we once lived there as well. But then Jesus came into our lives. Suddenly there is water in abundance, not just a small pool or shallow well, but a flowing stream — constant and pure. We are made new, we grow, and we provide fruit. In other words, we are who we were created to be because we are now connected to the one who made us. And more than that, God promises success as we continue to experience His relationship with us. Things were once like a dry wasteland. We were withering. But God flows around us like water, and we come to life.
