Jesus brings peace

But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. – Isaiah 53:5

When Jesus suffered and died on the cross it was a vicarious and substitutional act. Those are fancy words, but what do they mean?

Jesus took all of the punishment that we should have had to endure. Those long words simply mean “instead of us.” We should suffer because of our sins, but Jesus suffered instead of us. We should give up our life because of our wrongdoings, but Jesus died instead of us. He went through pain, humiliation and death so that we wouldn’t have to. He did it instead of us. This is amazing love.

We don’t always understand the seriousness of our sin, but it keeps us from a relationship with God. There are no amount of apologies or number of good things we can do to fix that relationship by ourself. Jesus came and took our sins while he was beaten and crucified. He endured death, the consequence of sin. But then to demonstrate His divinity and show that our sins had been taken care of, he rose from the dead. His resurrection is the proof that sin has been overcome and we are forgiven.

His punishment and the depth of his suffering brings us healing and peace. What an incredible thought — the punishment that brings us peace, He took it for us. We are now forgiven, brought into God’s family, and everything we could ever need is promised to us. Our punishment is gone, our guilt is taken away, death is changed into eternal life. All of this because of what Jesus did, and all we have to do is believe.
