For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. – Matthew 11:30
A yoke is a kind of bracket or coupling that fits over the neck of two animals (usually oxen) so that they can work together pulling a plow or wagon. It also helps to control them. But how does Jesus make this easy and light?
Imagine you are one of the oxen. But the ox next to you is the strongest, most powerful ox in the whole world. You wouldn’t have to do any of the pulling or hard work. In fact, you wouldn’t even be able to. Basically, all you have to do is walk and keep up. (Or else you will get dragged along and it will be really uncomfortable!)
Jesus is doing all of the pulling. It’s not as if we can really be helping the all-powerful maker of the universe. But he allows us to help, he allows us to walk alongside. We just have to keep up. If Jesus stops we stops. If Jesus goes we go. If Jesus turns we turn. And behind us the wagon or the plow gets pulled and the work gets done.
The amazing thing is that Jesus does this with our own burdens. Are we struggling? Jesus is pulling all the weight. Do we have problems? Jesus is pulling all the weight. Do we have needs? Jesus is pulling all the weight. He makes our needs, problems and struggles light, because He does all the carrying! All we have to do is walk next to him and keep up.
