Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy – 1 Peter 1:8
The apostle Peter is writing these words, and we have to remember he had seen the Lord.
Peter had been with Jesus for about three years. He had heard the Lord’s voice every day, had eaten hundreds of meals with Him, and had listened to His teachings. Peter had watched as Jesus was taken away to be judged and crucified. Later he saw Him risen from the dead, looked at His scars, and watched Him ascend into heaven.
Peter must have marveled at the power of the gospel. Even those who had never seen the Lord were still filled with belief and incredible joy. This must have been a constant comfort and encouragement to him as he brought the message of faith and forgiveness, and told about what Jesus had done.
We experience this as well, in both ways. We are inspired by the joy God’s love brings to others. We also experience it ourselves. God’s love fills us with gladness and we can’t even explain it. Joy beyond words!
