Justice and mercy come from humility

justic and mercy come from humility lettering

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. – Micah 6:8

Imagine for a moment you are out for a walk. Just a comfortable stroll. But also imagine that God is walking with you. How might you talk or act?

I am sure we would’t be talking about ourselves, or bragging about anything we had done that day. We wouldn’t be telling God, “I did some amazing things at work” or “look at how great I keep my lawn” or “I bought my kids this really cool app.” Anything we could say about ourselves would seem trivial and petty. I think we would just stammer through apologies and thank-yous and praises. In other words, as we walked with God we would be overwhelmed by His power and greatness, and humbled by our own frailty.

God loves humility. Not because He wants to embarrass or shame us, but because He wants us to understand who He is. As we walk humbly, it allows us to love others because we no longer see only ourselves. As we walk humbly we are lead to true justice, because we want what is fair and right for everyone. As we walk humbly we can show mercy because we see ourselves as also in need of mercy.

Remember that Jesus humbled himself to become a man, there is nothing weak about it. Humility means we see ourselves as who we are. Not as shamed or cowering or useless. But as children totally reliant on our Father, and not our own strength or intelligence or creativity. And our Father values and loves us above everything else!
