Love is the greatest

Love is the greatest

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. – 1 Corinthians 13:13

These three things will always be, even into eternity. But won’t faith give way to actually seeing and being with the Lord? Will not hope be replaced with the reality of heaven?

When we are with the Lord, we will yet rely on Him. Each day (if indeed there are “days”) we will still lean on God’s faithfulness and care for us. So perhaps we need to start thinking of faith as trust, rather than simply believing. We will always trust in the Lord, even when we live in His presence and see Him all the time.

What about hope? Eternity will not be stagnant, but an ever growing experience of God’s love and creation. In God’s kingdom we will be looking forward to His promises and what new things will be in store for us. We will be asking ourselves, “what amazing things will God show us next?” So perhaps we need to start thinking of hope as something more than simply “awaiting a sure thing” and fill it with constant expectation and joy.

And love? We will finally know the true love of God. We will experience His nature and everlasting affection for each of us. Our faith and hope arise from this love even now, so imagine how it will be for all eternity — the greatest!
