Rest for your soul
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. – Matthew 11:29
Imagine the context of when Jesus said these things. Slavery and servitude were common. Most people lived in poverty, working hard to simply provide necessities. They had the burden of this daily labor, but also the burden of oppressive religious or social systems. In every part of their life, people were weighed down.
Our souls are still the same. We may have more leisure and the conveniences of technology, but our lives are filled with complexity. We chase after success, and overwork ourselves to death. Strain, doubt and worry dominate our lives.
Also, like all generations, we are overwhelmed by the heaviness of sin. We have little contentment and no hope, for eventually we will all face death. Everything we have worked for will be gone, and our lives will soon be forgotten.
But the words of Jesus are still true. Fulfillment and peace come through Him. As we learn from Him and do what He desires we become familiar with his gentle heart. Instead of being overwhelmed by anxiety, we are overwhelmed by the beauty of His forgiveness. His love for us replaces our discontent, and hope takes the place of our discouragement. A wonderful future waits for us, and in the present we live under the provision and promises of God. Jesus comes to our soul, and we find rest.
