For the Lord guards the path of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. – Psalm 1:6
What is it that makes you “righteous”? Is it charitable deeds? Is it a right attitude? Is it ethical behavior. Is it going to church? Is it treating others as you would be treated? Is it living a good life?
No, no, no, no, no and no. All of these things may be nice, but in Romans 3:10 we are told “no one is righteous.” In Isaiah 64:6 God tells us our own righteousness is like filthy rags. In other words, the most honorable, noble, kind, and compassionate act which we do apart from God is simply dirty and grubby. This is because one single sin within us takes us away from God and erases any good that we might think we can do. This is the horrible power of sin, and there is no way we can overcome it or make up for it ourselves.
Thankfully, God has given us a way to Him that doesn’t involve us having to make up for anything. He sent His own son Jesus to die for our sins. He rose from the dead, and all we have to do is believe on Him to be saved. We don’t have to do anything, because — we can’t do anything! God Himself provides forgiveness and sets us on the path of righteousness.
That is why He is able to guard our path, for He has placed us on the path and in fact has even created the path. All we do and say, the way we walk, is because we are forgiven. God has made us righteous, we didn’t (and couldn’t) do it ourselves. The way is safe, because He has made it for us and then put us there! We are on the right path.
