The Lord guards my path

For the Lord guards the path of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. – Psalm 1:6

What is it that makes you “righteous”? Is it good deeds? Is it a good attitude? Is it good behavior. Is it going to church? Is it treating others as you would be treated? Is it living an unselfish life?

No, no, no, no, no and no. In Romans 3:10 we are told “no one is righteous.” In Isaiah 64:6 God tells us our own righteousness is like filthy rags. In other words the most honorable, noble, kind, and compassionate things which we do apart from God are dirty and grubby. They don’t count for anything.

One single sin within us takes us away from God and erases any good that we might think we can do. And we are born sinful. This is the horrible power of sin, and there is no way we can overcome it or make things right by ourselves.

Thankfully, God has given us a way to find forgiveness that doesn’t involve us having to do anything except believe. He sent His own son Jesus to die for our sins and He rose from the dead. This is what saves us. We don’t have to do anything, because—we can’t do anything! God Himself provides forgiveness and sets us on the path of righteousness.

We are forgiven because of Jesus. Through His death and resurrection God sees us as righteous. We couldn’t do it ourselves, but Jesus has. God guards our path, because Jesus has made us new and walks on the path with us. God’s love and grace keeps us safe!
