Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise. – Ephesians 5:15
No one wants to be thought of as foolish, ignorant or lacking sense. We even fake it in order to make it appear we know things even when we don’t. Sometimes we even fool ourselves.
But God wants us to live in wisdom. Not pretending to others or to ourselves. How do we find wisdom? Throughout the book of Proverbs we are told that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. “Fear of the Lord” means that we hold God in reverence and awe because we understand that He is the all-powerful maker of the universe, yet He also deeply loves us. Seeing God in this way is the start of having wisdom.
So many things flow from this reverence and awe. We view ourselves with humility, but also understand that God loves us and we are important to Him. We begin to understand the power of God, but we know that we can trust Him and He works for our good. We see our sinfulness in contrast to God’s goodness, but we also believe that he has rescued us, again because of His deep love for us.
These are the things that define how we live. Wisely!
